Join ASA's Stewardship Manager Drake McDonough for the second installation of the Stories in the Stones series. This outing will explore the geological, archaeological, and agricultural history behind the stone walls that define our regional landscape.
This guided walk will include a short hike partway up the hillside to a typical stone wall. Along the way, participants will learn about the geologic forces that created the abundant fieldstones, including how to identify some different rock types and trace their likely origins, as well as the human history of how these stones were cleared from fields and repurposed into the walls that still shape our agricultural landscape today.
This outing is suitable for all ages, provided participants are comfortable walking off-trail and have a curiosity for geology and archaeology.
Funding for this program is made possible in part by the Robert H. Wentorf Foundation.
