Please join the Agricultural Stewardship Association (ASA) and the American Farmland Trust for a FREE farm leasing workshop and tour of two farm properties.
Leasing farmland can be a cost-effective path to gaining valuable farming experience and building financial readiness for the eventual purchase of your own farm property. The training includes a morning workshop on leasing land followed by lunch and farm visits.
11 a.m.—1 p.m. Workshop & lunch [lunch provided]
1—4 p.m. Tours of Stable Gate Farm and Bee Hollow Farm
- Suzanna Denison from American Farmland Trust will lead us through the “Leasing Land” module of the AFT curriculum developed to help the next generation of farmers gain skills and knowledge to access farmland. In this workshop, you will identify the elements of a good lease, assess landowner requirements and learn negotiating skills for a strong lease. You will use this information to determine the type of leasing arrangement that most closely aligns with your personal and business goals.
- Stable Gate Farm The property is a former dairy farm, now home to a family catering business and event space, as well as a vineyard and fields available for crop and animal production. We will meet with Valerie Feldman to tour the farm and talk about possible farm enterprises. The property also has a commercial kitchen which would be available for value-added processing of farm products. https://hudsonvalleyfarmlandfinder.org/find-a-farm/property/stable-gate-farm
- Bee Hollow Farm is also a former dairy farm, now home to a commercial beekeeping operation with farmland rented for crop production. The owner is interested in diversifying the type of agriculture on the farm, especially towards bee-friendly practices. https://hudsonvalleyfarmlandfinder.org/find-a-farm/property/bee-hollow-farm
Both farm properties are located in the southwest corner of Rensselaer County, close to urban markets in Troy and Albany and within a 3-hour drive of NYC markets.
Support for this workshop is provided by a Hudson Valley Farmlink Network Partner Grant with funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
