Growing deep topsoil watersheds for our kids and communities

Growing deep topsoil watersheds for our kids and communities
Date: June 14, 2022
Time: 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Place: Salem NY Fire Department
Address: 57 South Main Street, Salem, NY 12865

The Washington County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Agricultural Stewardship Association invite you to a farmer round-table think-tank with Abe Collins, Vermont grazier, consultant, and a co-founder of the Land Care Cooperative.

Farmers, foresters and other land managers are key to ensuring a future of clean water, stormwater storage, reduced droughts and floods, healthy bird, bat and bee populations, and healthy productive soils for our kids.

The Land Care Cooperative is a new farmer-led cooperative organized to create the future we want, heal the land and practice economic democracy.

Abe will lay out a vision and plan which is underway and evolving, for communities to hire farmers as “watershed contractors” to grow deep topsoil that can support the healthy functioning of whole watersheds.  This cooperative work to heal land can be structured to increase soil water holding capacity, largely eliminate erosion and runoff, and filter water while improving farm income and long-term farm viability.

We hope you will take a break and join us on Tuesday, June 14th from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. We will hear from Abe Collins and then break into smaller round table dialogs after lunch (included) to envision the future we want and how we could organize ourselves as watershed contractors to lead and help strengthen our communities and achieve environmental security and shared wealth.

Who should attend? Farmers, foresters and land managers
