300 Acres of Farmland Conserved in the Town of Salem
GREENWICH, NY - When you think of scenic Washington County, images come to mind of lush green farmland amidst rolling hills and valleys. Such images describe the Beattie Farm along Rt. 153 in Salem. The Agricultural Stewardship Association (ASA) is pleased to announce that with the partnership of The Conservation Fund (TCF), a national non-profit land conservation organization, it was able to assist Bob Beattie in conserving his 300 acre farm with a conservation easement.
"It makes me happy to know that my farm will forever remain available for farming and open space," says owner Bob Beattie. The Beattie farm supported a 75-cow dairy operation up until four years ago, when Bob retired from dairying. He continues to rent the farm to the neighboring dairy and maple syrup operator.
Located along the White Creek, the Beattie Farm contains over a mile-and-a-half of river frontage, a mixture of open fields and hilly forestland as well as highly scenic views. "The highly productive soils and location on the White Creek make Bob Beattie's farm an important land conservation project", says ASA executive director Teri Ptacek. "We're fortunate to have been able to protect this resource."
ASA is a nonprofit land trust founded by farmers in 1990 to conserve farmland in the Washington County region. To date, ASA has conserved 4,400 acres of farmland. Please consider assisting ASA in its farmland conservation efforts by becoming a member and volunteer. For more information, contact 692-7285 or send an email to asa@agstewardship.org.
