Robe-Jan Farm

120 Acres Conserved in Schaghticoke

This January, ASA was pleased to start the New Year by helping the Herrington family complete protection of their 120-acre Robe-Jan Farm in Schaghticoke.

Robert and Jane Herrington established the farm over fifty years ago and, with a shared ethic of hard work and good land stewardship, ran a successful small dairy operation as they raised four children together.

Having invested more than half a century’s worth of hard work in this land, the Herringtons were concerned about its future and wanted to be sure that no matter what happened down the road, the farm would never be developed. Working in partnership with the Town of Schaghticoke, ASA secured state funding to purchase development rights on the farm and protected it with a conservation easement.

Sadly, Bob Herrington passed away in August before the conservation of the farm could be completed.  Bob’s daughter, Judy Hoag explains, “Our father never wanted to see houses on this land and felt strongly that it should be kept in farming.” Judy, her brother Doug Herrington and their mother Jane were present on January 15, 2010 to sign the papers finalizing the permanent protection of Robe-Jan Farm, fulfilling Bob’s wishes for the future of the land he loved.
